Android ice cream sandwich
Overview
Android ice cream sandwich : At this stage it is unclear on what version number will be assigned to Ice cream sandwich – presumably 3.1. Another interesting fact that supports the ‘Ice cream sandwich’ rumour is that Google likes to run the update names in alphabetical order. First there was Cupcake, Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread and of course Honeycomb meaning the next update will have a name beginning with I.
While there have been a few people who’ve dropped hints saying that Honeycomb will be compatible with Android phones, we’ve yet to get a real confirmation that Honeycomb will be hitting anything other than tablets. Well, it seems Engadget recently got a chance to sit down with Matias Duarte, the WebOS designer lead that Google snatched up for Android, and it does indeed look like Honeycomb will reach phones, but may look a bit different when it hits those smaller screens. With the rumors of Android Ice Cream Sandwich hitting this summer as version 2.4, could this be the Honeycomb equivalent that is built for phones?
As well as announcing that Google are activating 350,000 Android devices per day, Google’s Eric Scmidt also announced the future of its Android OS for smartphones and gave some details on what will happen with the tablet version of Android, Honeycomb.
Schmidt said that Android Honeycomb and Gingerbread will be merged into one OS which will work on both smartphones and tablets, and this will take place with the release of Android Ice Cream Sandwich.
