AMD to Challenge NVIDIA With Android Support
Apr 8th
Things are getting very interesting in the Android chipset game. One of the desktop’s biggest GPU providers – NVIDIA – has already made their way into several Android phones, tablets, and soon-to-be netbooks (hybrid or otherwise), and now their biggest desktop competitor – AMD – looks to join them.
They’re said to be recruiting engineers to create chipset drivers for Android. Starting out, their focus will likely be getting their mobile chipset into the tablets and netbooks of today’s top OEMs, but that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually end up in phones.

ESPN outs WatchESPN app for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch
Apr 8th
ESPN has announced that its new WatchESPN application is now available for iOS devices including the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. The free app provides content from ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN3.com to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, and Verizon FIOS TV customers, and allows subscribers of those networks to stream content on their iOS devices. After installing the app, you’ll need to provide your cable subscriber credentials before accessing the goods. ESPN says that a version that’s specifically optimized for the iPad will launch – for free – in May. It also has plans to launch on other More >
SPB Shell 3D Android Review
Apr 8th
SPB Mobile Shell is one of the essential applications I have on my Nokia N8 and previously on my older Windows Mobile phones. It is a replacement application launcher that works not only quicker and better than Nokia’s default homescreen, but also in a way that makes the device much more pleasant to use. So when SPB asked if I wanted to try out the beta for SPB Shell 3D for Android, I seized the chance. It is hard getting excited about applications these days, more so mobile applications, but I truly had high hopes for SPB.

Asus Transformer Source code released already, shows HTC how it’s done
Apr 8th
Whoa, what do we have here. It looks like Asus has already released the source code for the yet-to-be released Asus Transformer Tablet/Laptop. Check out the fancy Transformer in our very own Hands-On. Asus recently released a website all about the Transformer, and now things just got even better.
In case you were wondering, the Asus EEE Pad Transformer is basically a top of the line Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet with some very nice specs. 10″ IPS Display is a nice one, the usual Tegra 2 dual-core beast, along with all those other treats you’d expect in a good, quality tablet. More >
Android Chief: We’re Still Open?
Apr 8th
Android chief Andy Rubin took to the blogs Wednesday evening to combat recent reports of Google clamping down on Android’s openness.
“We continue to be an open source platform and will continue releasing source code when it is ready,” wrote Rubin on the Android Developer Blog. “As I write this the Android team is still hard at work to bring all the new Honeycomb features to phones. As soon as this work is completed, we’ll publish the code. This temporary delay does not represent a change in strategy.”
Google has championed its platform as the open alternative to Apple’s closed iOS system. More >
HTC EVO View 4G Back to Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Apr 8th
We’ve been sent a message by HTC asking us to update our notes here about the HTC EVO View 4G. Apparently when we reported yesterday that Sprint’s HTC EVO View 4G was to ship with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, they’d jumped the gun on their website, which is where the whole world looks for solid info. Now consider this: what does Gingerbread mean for the world of Android phones? HTC EVO View 4G will certainly be upgraded to Android 3.0 Honeycomb soon after it’s released, but does this mean the Gingerbread wave is finally upon us?
What I speak of is of course a More >
Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt: Andy Rubin Smacks Down Critics
Apr 7th
If you’ve been keeping up with all the Android happenings as of late, I’m sure you’ve come across your fair share of editorials regarding the impending doom of Google’s once open Android OS. I can tell you, from my experience alone, I was beginning to have my doubts. After reading numerous articles on Google holding Honeycomb captive, to Google ending custom UI’s, I wasn’t sure exactly where Android was headed.
Calm your restless hearts, Android faithful. Andy Rubin has heard your cries and is here to “set the record straight.”
Trust us. This is one speech you’re going to want to read More >
IDC: Tablets, eReaders to fuel semiconductor growth; 120% increase expected in 2011
Apr 7th
Market analytics firm International Data Corporation (IDC) is predicting a big boom for semiconductor manufactures in 2011. Citing strong tablet and eReader-based semiconductor revenues — $3.3 billion in 2010 alone — IDC is predicting an additional 120% growth rate in 2011. “Media Tablets and eReaders are two devices that share components but whose bills of materials (BOM) are optimized for very different functions,” writes IDC. “The 2010 average Tablet semiconductor BOM was nearly one and one half times as much as the BOM for eReaders.” The firm also notes that 99% of advanced processing unit shipments in 2010 were based More >
HTC EVO View 4G Launching With Android 3.0 Honeycomb?
Apr 7th
Sprint announced the HTC EVO View 4G back in March at CTIA and what we saw was a gorgeous, WiMax enabled tablet that was running a version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. However, just a short time ago, Sprint’s “This just in” page listed the HTC EVO View 4G will be arriving with Android Honeycomb 3.0.
So which is it? Will the tablet that won our award for Best Tablet of CTIA arrive with the sweet taste of Honeycomb? Or will it arrive with a version of Gingerbread?
Unfortunately, the answer isn’t clear. Sprint spokesman Mark Elliott had told Android Central that the company More >
Samsung Galaxy S To Get Android 2.3 Gingerbread Within Weeks
Apr 7th
The popular Samsung Galaxy S smartphone will receive the latest Gingerbread update according to Three’s Twitter feed where a post mentions that the update is expected to come within the next couple of weeks but that they cannot yet confirm a date.
We saw Android OS 2.3.4 popping in our Google Analytics logs, aversion which was also powering the Sprint Nexus S 4G (the successor of the Nexus One and build by Samsung) towards the end of March 2011.
The Galaxy S, like the HTC Desire, can be purchased for as little as £18 per month on a two year contract on Talkmobile More >
